Keen to get rolling but not sure how to grip your skateboard deck? Well look no further…
Here is our guide on how to grip a skateboard deck but it’s by no means a definitive method. Everyone has their own way of doing it…but this is our way and it’s quick, clean and easy!
You will need:
- a skateboard deck
- a sheet of your preferred griptape
- a file
- a sharp Stanley knife
Check your griptape fits your skateboard deck. Do this by holding the sheet above the board and making sure there is an overhang all the way around.
Peel the griptape backing sheet off completely. Don’t be scared! Hold the griptape with the tips of your fingers, one hand at each end. You will be able to feel with your fingers when the sheet is centred on the deck as a result.
Press down and smooth out the griptape, starting at the centre and working outwards. Protect your hands by using the backing paper you peeled off earlier. (see below)
Cut the overhanging griptape with your Stanley knife. Do this at the four ‘hips’ of your deck (where the long edge curves towards the nose or tail – see illustration below). This makes the cutting stage easier and prevents bubbling, creases and an all round sticky mess.
Use your file to apply pressure all round the edges of the deck. This gives you a visual guide so you can easily see where to cut.
Cut from hip to hip where you made your incisions earlier. Secondly, repeat this for the nose and then, thirdly, the tail. Above all, try to use one fluid motion. You should be able to glide through if your knife is sharp and you’re confident with the action. But don’t worry if you get stuck or snagged. Just remove the knife, re-position and have another go. When you’re done you should end up with four clean pieces of excess griptape.
Smooth your edges with your file or a bit of discarded griptape.
Poke through from the other side to open up the holes for your truck bolts.
And there you have it! One skateboard with freshly applied griptape – ready to roll.
